Established in 1935 by Paul Sperry, Sperry Top Sider began to make boat shoes. Paul Sperry was an avid boater who injured himself on the slippery deck of his boat. Inspired by this he then went on to design and create the worlds first boat shoe, which used an innovative sole to prevent slipping.
The boat shoes became very popular, very quickly as Sperry Top Sider was operating successfully in a niche market. Then in 1939, the US Navy approached Sperry Top Sider and negotiated the right to manufacture the shoe for their sailors.
The brand is now owned by Collective Brands Inc. and still feature their signiture Sperry Top Sider non-slip shoes.
